PADDLE-OUT PROTEST

May 6th, 2026.

On Saturday, May the 16th, 2026, ocean advocates, water sports enthusiasts, and local residents will converge at Bonningstedt Parade on Seaford seafront for a major local demonstration against sewage pollution. Organized in coordination with Surfers Against Sewage’s national day of action, the community will stage a collective "Paddle-Out" to demand an immediate end to the contamination of local waterways.

The demonstration will take place near Skipper Watersports, with participants gathering on land at 10:30am before officially taking to the water at 11:15am.

The protest comes in response to alarming local environmental data. In 2025, Southern Water discharged raw sewage 997 times into designated bathing waters, including 158 documented incidents in Seaford. While this represented a slight year-over-year decrease, the problem remains pervasive: Seaford Bay has already suffered 138 spills since January of this year. Event organisers say that current government plans to transform the water industry fall drastically short, leaving communities to combat widespread data gaps and public health risks.

"With Government plans to transform the industry falling short, and huge data gaps still forcing us to fight a mystery while getting sick, the time to come together and take bold action is now," the event organizers stated.

The May 16th event is designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their experience level in the water. Participants are encouraged to join in whatever way they feel comfortable, whether paddling out to the safety buoys, paddling in at the shore, dipping their toes in the shallows, or remaining on the beach in solidarity.

Organizers are prioritizing participant safety and advise all attendees to review the official safety information available on the Surfers Against Sewage paddle-out website HERE prior to the event.
