LDC ON TARGET FOR NEWHAVEN HEALTH & WELLBEING HUB

February 8th, 2023.

LDC release:

Cabinet councillors at Lewes District Council have approved the next stage of their plans of the Reimagining Newhaven Programme, incorporating Future High Street Funding, to transform part of Newhaven town centre into a health and wellbeing hub, including new GP services.

With the leases on two doctor’s surgeries coming to an end, the council is working closely with local GPs and NHS Sussex to secure new and long-term primary care services in the town centre.

Work is advanced on the redevelopment of the old Co-op building in Newhaven Square and when complete, it will welcome a GP surgery that will integrate with health and wellbeing facilities run by Wave Leisure. The services will also complement the new creative and community offers being progressed as part of the Future High Streets Fund.

Following the decision on Thursday, 2 February, by councillors, the plans will also include a second GP surgery in the neighbouring former Peacocks shop unit. Both surgeries together will also enhance services through the implementation of a new Primary Care Network.

Councillor James MacCleary, (pictured), Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “In addition to our transformative work to establish a new GP surgery in the Co-op building, we are now also going to create a second surgery in the unit previously used by Peacocks in Newhaven Square.

“This news is a gamechanger for residents and the town’s doctors and surgery staff, at a time when primary care has never been under so much pressure. It fills me with immense pride to say that we are on target to give residents the modern and high-quality healthcare and wellbeing support they need and deserve.”

The £6.5 million funding agreed at Cabinet will allow the council to deliver on its determination to fully support on-going economic regeneration in Newhaven town centre - which will also include a multi-purpose public and events space on the upper decks of Dacre Road Car Park - and address the impact of inflation on labour and material costs since the inception of work on the ground.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Deputy Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “Our previous efforts to successfully secure funding from the Future High Streets Fund will pay huge social and economic dividends for residents and businesses in Newhaven.

“The decision we have taken today underpins our strategic planning for the town and I’m most grateful for the continued support and expert insight of our partners, notably GPs, NHS Sussex and Wave Leisure.”
