POLITICAL LEADERS JOIN CALL FOR NEW ERA AT UTC

January 27th, 2020.

The Leader of Lewes District Council and MP for Lewes have issued a statement of hope for the future of UTC in Newhaven.

The announcement by Councillor Zoe Nicholson and Maria Caulfield MP will be welcomed by many, particularly young people and businesses in the town.

UTC delivered courses in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computing to 14 to 18 year olds.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “We are working with ministers in the Department of Education to see what options are open to us and the district council stands ready to play the fullest possible role in that shared enterprise.

“We have a vision for UTC that will create a skilled workforce of the future, specialists in renewables, science and green technology.

“I’m convinced that opportunities for a new era of training and employment opportunities at UTC is within our grasp.”

Councillor Nicholson and Maria Caulfield MP will continue to work together and with partners to reach an outcome that the government can support.

Maria Caulfield MP adds, “This proposal to re-open the UTC building would enable the young people of Newhaven to have fantastic facilities on their doorstep for training and business start-ups and I am pleased to be working with Lewes District Council and the Department for Education on this proposal.”
