LDC FUNDS NEWHAVEN FORT

September 18th, 2019.

Lewes District Council has voted to fund a new bridge at Newhaven Fort. Built in 1871, Newhaven Fort is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument by Heritage England.

The existing bridge into the fort has been propped up in recent years with scaffolding, but deterioration has now made a complete replacement the best long-term solution.

Councillor Ruth O’Keeffe, Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “We’ve assessed all the options open to us and replacing the bridge is now the most logical step.

“The venue remains very popular, not just with tourists but also many residents who have a genuine fondness for the fort and I’m sure will be pleased we are investing in its future.”

The new bridge will have a life expectancy of about 60 years and is likely to cost up to £350k.

Councillor O’Keeffe added: “The new Co-operative Alliance will scrutinise all capital expenditure by the council to ensure residents receive the best possible value and that has certainly been the case with this project.

“We decided there was no sense in putting this work off any longer as it would be simply delaying inevitable further decline and potentially putting the safety of people at risk.”

Newhaven Fort is managed on a day-to-day basis by Wave Leisure and boasts a mix of exciting events throughout the year: history-based talks, festivals, pirate fun days, outdoor cinema, spooky experiences such as ghost walks and ghost hunting, classic car shows, services of remembrance and beacon lighting.
