NEWHAVEN FISH FESTIVAL FUN

June 27th, 2017.

The community of Newhaven came together to celebrate its fishing industry at the 14th Annual Fish Festival on Saturday. The event was organised by Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA).

The event took place in Newhaven’s West Quay car park, where hundreds turned out to join in the celebrations. Amongst the attractions were a magnificent display of locally caught fresh fish, fish cookery demonstrations and free tasters provided by community chef Olly Dawson, art and craft activities, dance display performed by Bambino Bop, Barefoot Boogaloo, Haven Harmonies and Martial Arts display performed by Scriven Martial Arts. There were a great variety of community groups and other local organisations who had stalls this year.

The Festivals’ Children’s Parade marched from Denton Island through the town centre and into West Quay car park with the Earthquake Drummers leading the way.

The theme of the day was Under Water and many among the procession were dressed in costumes and displayed the great artwork made by the children. Children from Denton Island Nursery, the Newhaven Primary Schools and SCDA Newhaven Family Learning Projects all took part, wearing nautical costumes and carrying colourful banners they had made.

Event organiser Sally Foote from Sussex Community Development Association said: "The Fish Festival has now become an institution in Newhaven. The whole community came together for a fun day out and that is what makes it so worthwhile. My thanks as always to Veolia for their continued sponsorship of this important community event and to Rampion Offshore Wind Farm for sponsoring the children's parade, which was bigger and better than previous years."
