LOCAL NATURE RESERVES NAMED TWO OF THE BEST IN BRITAIN

August 11 2016.

Castle Hill Local Nature Reserve in Newhaven and the Railway Land Local Nature Reserve in Lewes  are two of the very best in the UK – and that’s official.

The two Local Nature Reserves are among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. This is the sixth year in a row for Castle Hill in Newhaven and the seventh year in a row that the Railway Land has received this esteemed award.

Councillor Paul Franklin, Lead Member at Lewes District Council said: “We are thrilled to receive a Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy.

"This Award recognises and highlights that people in Newhaven and Lewes are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality.

"I would also like to extend a special thank you to the Meadows Minders at the The Castle Hill Group and Lewes Railway Land for their volunteer efforts in helping maintain and enhance these Local Nature Reserves for both people and wildlife.”
