SEAFORD HORTICULTURAL SHOW REPORT

July 6 2016.

Gary Carter reports:

The Seaford & District Horticultural Society's monthly social evening was held at St. Luke’s Church Hall on the 30th of June with a talk by Glyn Bareham, (above left), and the "Sweet Pea & Roses" competition.

The talk was entitled ‘Every Picture tells a Story’ and Glyn displayed a selection of photographs he had taken over the years, each one having a story behind it. There were pictures of people, country and seaside scenes and special occasions to name a few. Glyn told us he has always been interested in photography and will take a camera everywhere he goes - the thought in his mind being; ‘There is a photo waiting to be taken anywhere you might happen to be’.

Some particular scenes he said may never be repeated again - no camera means no picture - the shot gone for ever! Many of the pictures were exactly that - happening to be in the right place at the right time - a fleeting sun-beam, a child’s smile, special moments of life and one-off happenings.

Glyn also photographs at weddings and other special occasions, particular projects and commissions, so has wide experience and therefore able to answer questions from the audience following the talk.

The take-home message though - take a camera out with you - there could be a picture waiting to be taken, easy for some and a challenge for others to see that picture, but worth a try.

Several vases of Sweet Peas and Roses were displayed in the competition, showing off colourful blooms and lovely perfumes. These were judged and prizes awarded as follows: The Buckman Silver Challenge Cup, Best Sweet Pea exhibit to Julie Jupp, (above centre). The Gary Goacher Rose Bowl for Best Rose exhibit to Mike Logan, (above right).

The next meeting of the Society is booked for July the 28th  at St. Leonard’s Church Hall, when the speaker will be Wing Commander Patrick Coulcher. Patrick has been a regular speaker at social evenings, talking on flowers, wildlife and the countryside, but on this occasion his subject is “My 40years as a RAF Fighter Pilot”.

The Horticultural Show is the Society’s big event of the year and will be held at Seaford Head School, Arundel Road on Saturday the 13th of August. Everyone is welcome to come and view the exhibits from 1.30pm to 4.00pm.
