MARIA SETS SAIL

May 19 2016.

Local MP Maria Caulfield attended Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club for its Open Day in Piddinghoe last Saturday. The event was coupled with The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Push The Boat Out initiative.

The initiative, which looks to give people the opportunity to discover the sport at their local sailing venue and find out just how easy it is to get involved, saw events held across the country, including in Piddinghoe, where 137 visitors joined 50 members of the local sailing club for the event.

Members of Newhaven & Seaford Sailing Club welcomed the excellent turnout for the joint event, which gave visitors, including Maria, the chance to partake in sailing, windsurfing and paddle boarding, with the Club's facilities also on show.

Speaking at the event, Maria said: “Living so close to the coast, events like this are a fantastic opportunity to show people of all ages what water based activities there are to get involved in, as well as highlighting the safety aspects of living so close to the sea.

“I thoroughly enjoyed being among those enjoying the Sussex sunshine on the water on Saturday afternoon, and I would like to thank members of the Sailing Club for the support that they gave this event.

“I would also like to note the much loved, Piddinghoe based Clubhouse, which is vital to the future of this membership led voluntary organisation, and will soon require reconstruction, at which time members of the Sailing Club will be looking to local organisations and members of the community for funding. I hope that others will join with me in supporting the Club in this venture when plans come forward.”
