Local MP Maria Caulfield welcomed Young Mayor of Newhaven, Janki Pillai, to Parliament on Monday. Joining Janki for the visit were her family, fellow Young Mayor candidate Tamsin Pendrey and her family, Newhaven Councillor Angela Simmons and Clerk to Newhaven Town Council, Jacky Main.

The position of Young Mayor of Newhaven, which is open to young people aged between 11 and 18 and either living or within education in Newhaven, has been in place since 2009, the first Young Mayor of Newhaven being Daly Tucknott.

The role currently includes attending Council Meetings, sitting on the Youth Forum, attending and supporting local youth projects, and accompanying the Mayor of Newhaven on a range of visits across the town.

Speaking from Westminster, Maria said: “It was a great pleasure to meet Janki and other representatives from Newhaven at Parliament following their tour of the Westminster Estate. It is great to see young people being given the opportunity to take part in the political process, and I was delighted to see the enthusiasm exhibited by both Janki and Tamsin.”
