Staff at Newhaven Co-op supermarket have been given their redundancy notices and the store is set to close some time towards the end of February.

A spokesman for Newhaven Chamber of Commerce said: “We are saddened by the loss of another store from our long-suffering town.

"With no bank remaining, the loss of our only town centre supermarket will make it even harder for the remaining shops to make a living.

"The vicious circle caused when there are ‘no customers because there are few shops because there are no customers’ will only be exacerbated by the co-op closing it’s doors.

"The Chamber of Commerce will do what it can to entice a replacement retailer to take on the premises, but we feel it will be an uphill struggle, to put it mildly.”
