BEACHY HEAD RESCUE DURING AIRBOURNE

August 18 2015.

Newhaven’s relief Severn Class lifeboat ‘RNLB Daniel L Gibson’ and her volunteer crew were launched on service on Saturday following reports of a vessel with mechanical failure close to the Beachy Head lighthouse.

The lifeboat was launched at 12.45pm to a 26ft Bay-liner which had suffered an unexpected mechanical failure on board, resulting in a total loss of power. Fortunately the persons on board were well equipped and quickly made anchor.

Having reported their position to HM Coastguard the lifeboat made at best speed to the location and passed a tow line.

With the line secure the tow was commenced back into Newhaven marina. Just as the lifeboat got underway the crew were treated to an impromptu fly past from an RAF Typhoon, just as it started its display at the famous Eastbourne Airbourne festival.

Coxswain Paul Legendre said: “It makes all the difference to have basics on board like lifejackets and an operational radio. The sea can change in an instant and our coastal waters are unpredictable."
