LIB DEMS CELEBRATE AS 18 YEAR OLD STORMS TO VICTORY IN SEAFORD

July 29 2015.

Local Liberal Democrats are celebrating after their 18 year old candidate, Isabelle Murray, won a Seaford Town Council seat from the Conservatives last Thursday.

This follows anger when a Conservative councillor failed to take up his position after winning a seat in May, meaning local taxpayers were faced with a £6,000 bill to re-run the election.

The Lib Dem win has also cost the Conservatives control of the Town Council.

The result was as follows:

LIB DEM 370
UKIP 210
IND 207
CON 193
GREEN  57

Turnout: 26%

It is understood that Isabelle is now the youngest councillor in the country.

Cllr. Isabelle Murray said: “I would like to say thank you to everyone who voted for me. I fought the campaign on three key issues - Stopping anti-social behaviour, getting more facilities for young people and fighting for affordable housing.

“I believe that all three of these require bringing together people of all ages to find solutions.

“I won due to the dedication of the local Lib Dem councillors, everybody who volunteered to help with the campaign, and of course the supporters. I’m very proud to have joined such a caring and hard-working team.”

Cllr. Adam Maclean, Leader of the Lib Dem Group on Seaford Town Council, said: “This shows the Lib Dem fightback is well under way. We had a great response on the doorstep and our supporters were pleased to see us back on the streets campaigning hard.

Local County Councillor Carolyn Lambert (Lib Dem) added: “It also shows how young people also care strongly about local issues and want to make our town an even better place to live.”
