April 10 2015.

RNLI Newhaven played host to the Sovereign Seas Maritime Folk Festival over the weekend of the 28th and 29th of March, successfully raising £876.00 for the volunteer lifeboat crew.

Derek Seed, of folk group Hard Pressed and main organiser for the Festival said: "Hopefully this inaugural Festival is just the beginning. The Lifeboat House is an excellent venue and we very much hope to return next year."

Various artists arrived from all over the country and The Ship and The Ark public houses were also venues over the Festival weekend, providing taster sessions and introducing traditional maritime folk songs and sea shanties to a wider and appreciative audience, with traditional dance performed by Long Man Morris and Marlings Clog.

A highlight of the weekend was an unexpected performance at the Lifeboat House by nationally renowned folk singers Barrie and Ingrid Temple, who delighted the crowd.

The next fundraising event being held at the Newhaven Boathouse is in celebration of the RNLI National Fundraising Day Mayday Music Night with Fish and Chips is on Saturday the 2nd of May from 7.00pm.
