CALL FOR SUPPORT OF THE RNLI RESPECT THE WATER CAMPAIGN

January 19 2015.

There were fewer shouts for the local volunteer lifeboat crew during 2014 than in the previous exceptionally busy year. The RNLI’s Respect the Water campaign was launched in August 2013 at Brighton Beach by professional England rugby player James Haskell and, although the message is slowly being heeded, it is more relevant and more important to raise awareness in 2015 when considering the nearby shoreline has already claimed a number of young lives.

Fundraising for the charity is, as always, continuing in earnest and the RNLI has announced that its National Fundraising Day is changing from SOS Day on the last Friday of January to Mayday and will now coincide with the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

Locally, Newhaven & District Lifeboat Society has held a ‘Slurp Our Soup’ fundraising event for many years and is set to continue the tradition with a Welcoming Winter Warmer of Soup Slurping and cheese rolls at Newhaven Lifeboat House, Riverside on Friday  the 30th of January from 11.30am to 2.30pm. Whilst raising vital funds, it is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in the lifeboat to visit the station and learn more about the work of the local lifeboat service.

Details of further fundraising events can be obtained by emailing rnlinewhaven.society@hotmail.co.uk or from http://rnli.org/newhavenbranch
