MAJOR UPGRADE PLANNED FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT AT NEWHAVEN STATION

October 8 2014.

Haven residents are being offered the chance to view plans for improved public transport facilities near Newhaven Town railway station. The East Sussex County Council scheme is due to be completed in time for the opening of the new University Technical College (UTC) on Railway Quay in September next year. The facility will include improved bus stops and waiting areas and provide better links between the station, bus services and the college.

The design will incorporate bus stops for east and westbound buses, a taxi rank and a pick-up and drop-off area, while a new real-time passenger information system will aim to  improve the connection between bus and rail services.

Cllr. Carl Maynard, county council lead member for transport and environment, said: “As a council we’re keen to encourage more people to use public transport for everyday journeys.

“These improvements will allow a smoother connection between rail and bus services, provide better facilities for students and staff at the new college and improve the experience of passengers.”

The £200,000 project is being funded by a combination of county council funds set aside for local transport improvements and contributions secured from local developments.

The new layout is being developed in consultation with local organisations including bus and rail operators. Work is due to begin in March next year.

You can view the plans online from this Friday, October the 10th at www.eastsussex.gov.uk/haveyoursay and have until Friday, October the 31st to submit any comments.
