The Haven area is preparing for the arrival of some of the world’s top cyclists when they take part in the penultimate leg of the Tour of Britain on Saturday the 13th of September. The rolling landscapes of the South Downs are a major draw for cyclists of all levels throughout the year, and will pose some real challenges to the professional cyclists. The tour will head through North Chailey into Newick where there will be a 1 kilometre Sprint section, heading out through Wealden and Eastbourne and racing through the towns of Seaford, Newhaven and Lewes, passing through Plumpton and Westmeston, ahead of climbing Ditchling Beacon for the penultimate King of the Mountain in Stage 7 - rising more than 150m in just 1.6km - racing down into Brighton for the finish.
Parking will be limited during the race and there will be rolling road closures along the route, so the use of bikes, foot or public transport are recommended to view the Tour or to attend the events.
Local Councils have been working together to make sure there are a host of events for residents and visitors to enjoy before and after they line the route to welcome and show their appreciation for Britain’s biggest professional cycling race.
Seaford Town Council will be televising the Tour live on a big screen at the Salts Recreation ground between 1.00pm and 4.00pm. A fun fair will also be there throughout the day; as well cycle and spin classes hosted by Wave Leisure; public rides with Cycle Seahaven and family cycle train rides with Sustrans are just a few of the activities available on the day as well as a ticketed evening film.
Newhaven Town Council is organising a photographic competition for residents and visitors on the day, together with a special cycle-themed market in Newhaven High Street from 9.00am to 4.00pm, with entertainment and community group stalls, plus a range of market stalls.
There is a call for volunteers to marshal the streets whilst the Tour rides through the area. If you are interested then contact:
