SEAFORD SETS UP EVENTS COMMITTEE

August 5 2014

The Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Mark Brown, intends to establish an “Events Committee” made up of residents of Seaford and Bishopstone who would set up and run events within the town. The committee would be totally non-political, free from council control and would aim to resurrect events such as the annual Seaford and Bishopstone carnival/fair and the Seaford based motor bike festival.

Other events could include a music, theatre and drama day, a “Proms Day” a “Picnic in the Park” for children, older youngsters and adults with a picnic, barbeque, children’s carnival, afternoon music and evening disco and dance, a “Sports Tournament” and similar cultural and fun activities.

The committee would set up liaisons with other organisations within Seaford who already run events such as the Armed Forces Day and Donkey Derby, with the aim of persuading locally based charities and similar groups to take a more active part in these events.

Regular Open Meetings would also be held to help to gauge public opinion and to gain ideas for new events within the town.

Mayor Brown said: "Seaford Town Council does not currently have the luxury of an Events Officer, so as Mayor of Seaford I consider it necessary to make some alternative arrangements in order to facilitate the co-ordination of current and possible future town based events with those organisations in Seaford that could help to run them. The first step is the setting up of an Events Committee to examine how events can be proposed, set up and run efficiently by the residents of Seaford."

The committee would steer and organise events and would ideally consist of up to eight or more members, although sub-committees could be formed to run individual events. There is no limit as to what can be organised or to who can join this committee. They may use the council facilities in Church Street for meetings although the committee is expected to be self-sufficient. Limited financial support for advertising and literature may be available from the Mayor’s fund.

Seaford Town Council facilities such as the Salts, Martello Fields, the Martello Tower area, the Crouch Gardens, Eastern Esplanade and similar sites may be made available for events.

Events would need to be self-supporting although individual events may be sponsored by local businesses and organisations who may also wish to sponsor Seaford based charities and similar functions whilst supporting their events.

It is envisaged that the first meeting would take place in September 2014 to start to plan for events in 2015.

If you have the necessary skills, free time, energy and enthusiasm to join this committee and help to put Seaford and Bishopstone quite firmly on the map then contact the Mayor’s secretary at the council offices at 37 Church Street, Seaford, BN25 1HG, telephone 01323 894870, email – admin@seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk or write to that address c/o the Mayor of Seaford.
