Facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users in Newhaven and Peacehaven could be boosted under new proposals. East Sussex County Council has put forward plans to improve conditions along the A259 and in Newhaven for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users, and is asking members of the public to give their views.

Key stakeholders, including Newhaven, Peacehaven and Telscombe Town Councils, district and county council members, Sussex Downs College and Cycle Seahaven, were asked earlier this year about the main issues facing pedestrians, cyclists and bus users.

From their feedback, the county council has drawn up proposals including;

• New and upgraded pedestrian crossings along the A259 in Peacehaven

• Improved bus stops along the A259

• New cycling facilities in Newhaven

• A shared pedestrian/cycleway along part of the existing footpath on the A259 between Peacehaven and Newhaven

• A new bicycle ramp on the steps to Tideway School

Cllr. Carl Maynard, lead member for transport and environment, said: “We have worked closely with local people to identify the issues facing cyclists, pedestrians and bus users in the Newhaven and Peacehaven area.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to go to one of the events, find out more about the proposals and give their feedback.”

The first public exhibition of the plans will be held on Saturday, November the 23rd between 10am and 4pm at Newhaven Baptist Church Hall in Church Hill. Officers will be on hand to explain the scheme and answer questions.

Further exhibitions will be held at the Anzac Room at the Meridian Centre, Peacehaven, on Friday, November the 29th between 2pm and 8pm and Saturday, November the 30th between 10am and 4pm, and at the Hillcrest Centre in Hillcrest Road, Newhaven on Monday, December 2 between 2pm and 8pm.

The proposals are being funded by money given to the county council from the government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund. This funding is being used to develop walking, cycling and public transport improvements in Lewes, Peacehaven, Newhaven and Eastbourne which support local economic development and reduce carbon emissions.
