RODMELL MAN ON INDECENT IMAGES CHARGES

October 21 2013.

A Rodmell man has appeared in court charged with offences relating to indecent images of children.

John Powell, 58, self-employed, of Martens Field, Rodmell, appeared in custody at Brighton Magistrates Court on Friday 18 October, charged with 11 offences. He applied for bail but this was refused following submissions to the court by the Crown Prosecution Service, and he was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on 14 November.

One charge relates to the taking of an indecent image of a child known to him; four relate to making indecent images and videos at levels 4 and 5, five other charges relate to allegedly indecent images and videos at levels 1 through to 5, and one charge alleges possession of 363 prohibited images. In total Mr Powell had a total of 4,551 allegedly indecent images and videos of children.

The child known to him has been identified and safeguarding arrangements have been put in place. None of the charges relate to allegations of contact offending and all the other allegedly indecent images and videos are Internet-based.

The charges, authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service, follow an intelligence-led investigation by the Paedophile On-Line Investigation Team (POLIT) of Sussex Police.

The investigation continues and anyone who has any concerns and wishes to speak to police can make contact in confidence via 101 asking for POLIT, or for the Neighbourhood Response Sergeants at Lewes.
