BOUNCING CHEQUES HIT SEAFORD

September 11 2013.

Police are warning shops to be on their guard after a series of incidents in Seaford in which items have been bought using cheques that have bounced.

It is not known whether these were legitimate cheques or not, but regardless of whether they were, it is an offence to purchase items using a cheque if you know or suspect there are insufficient funds in your account for them to clear.

A police spokesman said: "Since the withdrawal of cheque guarantee cards, cheques are not a particularly good way of accepting payment and it is up to the retailer as to whether they accept cheques or not.

"These incidents suggest that local shops should be wary about accepting cheques, unless of course they know the buyer and that the funds are there to pay for the goods."
