A woman was violently attacked in the Marshall Road area of Newhaven town centre at 12.30am on Sunday the 1st of September, when a group of people were walking home after enjoying a night out at The Engineers pub.

They were approached by an unknown man who, without any provocation, started arguing with a woman. He moved away, but continued to make threats to assault her.

Shortly after, a dark coloured/silver saloon car pulled up next to the group before the occupants got out and attacked the 27-year-old victim, punching her so hard to the face that she fell backwards and struck her head on the pavement.

A police spokesperson said: "This was a callous and totally unprovoked attack which led to the victim losing consciousness and suffering a large open injury to her head. When police and ambulance were called, she was still unconscious; after coming round in the ambulance she lost her sight for some time as a result of the trauma to her head.

"Fortunately, she was treated in hospital and the injury was not as serious as first thought. However, that doesn't take away the severity of what happened to a young woman who was simply walking home with friends.

"None of the group knew the attackers and we are keen to hear from anyone who either witnessed what happened or has information about this incident. We'd particularly like to hear from anyone with details of the saloon car. Anyone who can assist police is asked to call 101, quoting serial 0253 of 01/09, or email  Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."
