DIEPPE RAID COMMEMORATION PARADE

August 14 2013.

Councillor Steve Saunders writes:

On behalf of Newhaven Town Council, I'd like to thank all the ex-service personnel, the cadet forces, the British Legion representatives and standard bearers for making it another poignant and respectful service. Also thanks to the residents of the town, who continue to come out in gratitude for the men who left our shores so long ago and for the Newhaven Fort Staff for doing us all proud and putting on a fantastic spread for all those involved.

Thanks too, to the St. John's Ambulance volunteers who were kept busy looking after several people who were unfortunately affected by the remarkable weather we were blessed with for the ceremony and the the local police and neighbourhood officers for doing a great job in traffic marshaling for the march past.

Next weekend, our Mayor Julie Carr will be travelling to Dieppe to lay wreaths at the memorials close to the beaches in France, where it all happened. Thousands will turn out for the ceremonies there too and it is good to know that the memory of the raid is respected on both sides of the channel.
