POLICE SUSPECT ARSON RESPONSIBLE FOR NEWHAVEN CLIFFTOP FIRES

August 13 2013.

Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service colleagues are appealing for help in locating a group of suspected arsonists who are thought to have set a number of fires on the cliff top above Newhaven on Saturday night (August 10th).

A large area of gorse was destroyed in the fire on Castle Hill around 11.00pm and fire crews had to attend a number of other smaller fires in vegetation in the area.

PC Jonathan Attfield said: "In the windy conditions, this could have had far more serious consequences. At one time, the fire encroached on a nearby caravan site, but firefighters were able to bring it under control before it came too close. Eight fire appliances were deployed to the scene while the fire was at its height.

"We would like to speak to three white youths, all around 18, who were seen running from the caravan site and getting into a blue hatchback around 11.30pm. They drove off at the top of Court Farm Road.

"Anyone who saw them or has any information about the fire is asked to call us on 101 quoting serial 1874 of 10/08 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
