SUMMIT SPECIAL SPECTACULAR

June 12 2013.

The Denton Challenge 'Summit Special' event took place last Saturday on the Avis Way Recreation Field in Denton. It was a community sports day and BBQ organised by a committee from Denton Church, the James Daniels Memorial Fund and local volunteers.

The wind blew in from the north, but the sun shone on and a glorious day started with a few words from Norman Baker MP, who welcomed hundreds of locals, visitors, families and friends and encouraged them to enjoy the selection of sporting challenges on offer.

Spectators were entertained in the central arena with songs from Denton Community School Choir, before displays from Scriven's Martial Arts and Seaford Dog Agility Club. Dancing played a part, with displays from Norcross Dancers, Hula-Maniacs, Belly Dancing and, not to be outdone, the local ladies and gent from Denton Extend Exercise showed their moves too!

Local sports and social groups ran 'sporting challenges' around the arena, all of which could be enjoyed for a nominal charge. On completion of the challenges participants claimed their 'Summit Special' rosette, before enjoying a free burger from the Denton Scouts BBQ. Stickers and certificates were also issued courtesy of Active Sussex.

A wide range of games were provided by Newhaven Cricket and Tennis Clubs, DaSH JFC, South Heighton Bonfire Society, Plumpton Bowmen and others. Fete stalls and attractions were provided by other local groups and charities including Hayden's Wish, South Heighton WI, Denton Brownies, Help for Heroes, GOSH and others. There was also a climbing wall which proved very popular throughout the afternoon.

The afternoon finished with the annual tug-of-war competition, with teams from Autowise, the Flying Fish and others, with this year's winners coming from Titan Fitness in both the men's and women's events.

The afternoon concluded as the raffles were drawn and trophies and rosettes presented on the podium.

'Summit Special' was well supported by local businesses, Councils and charities, and the organisers them all for enabling them to organise such a successful and enjoyable, inclusive day.
