WILL YOU BE ABLE TO VOTE?

April 5 2013.

Hundreds of people in the Lewes district area could miss their chance to vote in the local elections this May if they don't take action now.

Thursday the 2nd of May is the chance for residents to have their say in local authority elections to East Sussex County Council and there is also a by-election to elect a town councillor to Seaford East ward of Seaford Town Council.

"We want everyone eligible to vote to be able to do so," says Lewes district electoral registration officer, Jenny Rowlands. "Anyone who has moved house in the past few months needs to register with their new address. We are also keen for anyone turning 18 on or before the 2nd of May to make sure they are registered, so they can vote for the first time."

The deadline to register is Wednesday the 17th of April. Call 01273 484116 to request a registration form or you can print one off from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

Samantha Mills, head of campaigns at the Electoral Commission, the independent elections watchdog, points out that many people may be planning holidays in May. "If you are going to be away, you may ask to vote by post, or by proxy. You'll find more details at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk  It's your vote - don't lose this chance to use it," she urges.

The deadline to register and apply for a postal vote is Wednesday  the17th of April and for a proxy vote, Wednesday the 24th of April.
