RAILWAY QUAY QUESTIONS

January 31 2013.

Piddinghoe resident Steve St.Clair writes:

Following the recent decision taken by Lewes District Council to refuse planning consent for Arrowcroft's scheme to redevelop Railway Quay in Newhaven in favour of Avalons out-of-town Asda Supermarket with 190 new homes and half a new port access road, questions are inevitably being asked about the future of such a prominent site so close to the beleaguered town centre containing access to vital existing rail and ferry services.

I clearly recall Phil Temmerman of Avalon standing up at the original planning meeting at Tideway School in May 2012 and pronouncing to the committee and 150 odd members of the public in attendance, that if Avalon was granted consent to develop the Eastside scheme, the company would also redevelop Railway Quay for the people of Newhaven.

Like me, I am sure local residents are looking forward to seeing Mr.Temmeman's exciting proposals, perhaps including the rail / ferry / bus / taxi transport interchange, ferry port entrance, public open space and riverside walk that Newhaven so badly needs and deserves, along with the listed Victorian Marine Engineering Sheds fully refurbished and given over for community use and a new, relocated Railway Social Club.

Come on Mr.Temmeman, time to put your money where your mouth is.
