MIKE’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY

December 7 2012.

Newhaven Chamber of Commerce member, jeweller Mike Shorer, has just landed the commission of a lifetime. He has been asked to redesign the Ladbrokes World Darts trophy in memory of the darts commentator Sid Waddell, who died in August of this year. The trophy will be renamed as the Sid Waddell Trophy and will keep alive his memory, as well as recognising his contribution to darts for over 30 years.

The trophy depicts the world as a gemstone, held by six 'claws' symbolizing two sets of darts, mounted on a plinth of black granite and rare Eritraean Red Marble. It is topped with a 20 carat cabochon garnet to represent the bullseye and features a silver plaque bearing Sid Waddell's signature.

The trophy stands at around 28 inches tall and weighs 25kg and will be presented to the 2013 Ladbrokes World Champion by Sid Waddell's son Dan on New Year's Day.

The Ladbrokes World Darts Championship will be held from December 14th to January 1st at Alexandra Palace and viewable on Sky Sports.

Mike said: "I am delighted and honoured to have been asked to re-design this trophy for such a prestigious event. I would like to thank all my colleagues at the Newhaven Chamber of Commerce who have watched the trophy take shape over a number of weeks and who have given me so much support and encouragement. When working for yourself it is very helpful to be part of a support network of other self-employed people with whom you can share issues and bounce ideas off."
