WINTER WONDERLAND – SHOWCASE FOR WINTER GARDENING AND ALTERNATIVE PHYSICAL EXERCISE

November 15 2012.

The Growing Together Community Garden (GTCG) in Pevensey Road Newhaven has successfully secured a £2000 grant from the Co-operative to run a winter gardening project. Hayley Cox, chair of the GTCG committee, said: "We are thrilled to have been awarded this funding and excited about showing people what can still be grown and achieved in the garden over the winter months."

The project will kick off with a five-week "Walking into Winter Wonderland" course showcasing winter gardening delivered by the Newhaven Community Development Association (NCDA). Sessions will be free, open to all and held every Thursday from 10.ooam to 12.30pm from 22nd November to 20th December. Topics covered include, "Sowing and Growing", "Winter Window Boxes", "The Cycle of Life" (composting, green manures etc.) and "A Bright Future" (planning ahead). This course is going to run in parallel with an East Sussex County Council funded Step into Wellbeing project, which will include a lead walk up to the garden and demonstrating the benefits of gardening as an alternative physical exercise. Following this there will be art workshops, woodwork sessions, celebratory events and more.
