FOUR APPEAR IN COURT FOLLOWING NEWHAVEN HIGH STREET CRASH

[IMAGE1]Two men, a boy and a girl, appeared in custody at Brighton Magistrates Court today, yesterday, charged with offences including burglary and vehicle theft, after two cars stolen in Lewes were recovered in Newhaven.

The cars, a Porsche Boxster and a BMW 535 estate, were reported stolen from outside a house in Houndean Rise, Lewes, at 4am on Sunday 19 August. The house was also entered and property stolen including mobile phones and cash. The house occupants heard the cars being driven off and rang police. After a search of the area, with the assistance of ANPR (Automatic Numberplate Recognition) cameras, police units found the two cars being driven in the Newhaven one-way system shortly after 5.30am. They made off at the approach of police but seconds later both crashed in Bridge Street. The BMW hit a lamppost and overturned outside The Bridge pub and the Porsche crashed further up the road.

Daniel Meehan, 19, unemployed, of Albion Hill, Brighton, was charged with burglary, driving whilst disqualified, driving with excess alcohol, driving with no insurance, and aggravated vehicle taking.

Damien Leaney, 19, unemployed, of Horton Road Brighton, was charged with burglary, aggravated vehicle taking, and driving with no insurance.

A 16-year old boy from Brighton was charged with burglary, aggravated vehicle taking, and no insurance, and a 17-year old girl from Brighton was charged with burglary, theft, aggravated vehicle taking, and driving with no insurance.

Detective Constable Annie Nash of East Sussex CID said; "If anyone saw these two cars, perhaps together, in those areas between 4am and 5.30am, please call us on 101 quoting serial 0375 of 19/8."
