HAVEN NEWS WEEKEND PREVIEW

July 27 2012.

In a week when KFC made a finger lickin' landing in the Haven, the Tombestoners were warned off err... Tombstoning, East Sussex County Council got legal with the travellers in Peacehaven and hasn't yet said where the travellers should go next, (hmmm...), at least the weather stayed bright for most of the time and we can look forward to the sunshine continuing into the weekend. Apparently... The activities are a little thin on the ground again, but, as ever, those companies and organisers who are going the extra mile to entertain, educate and amaze you, will need your support. So here goes...

In Newhaven, the weekend kicks off with a youth disco at Shakespeare Hall, Fort Road this evening. We don't have any further details, other than it is run on the last Friday of every month and organised by Wave Leisure. Sticking with the disco theme, and Newhaven's Young Mayor, Charlotte Crookston, is holding a Family Roller Disco from 7.30pm to 9.15pm just along the coast at the Wave Leisure Centre in Meridian Way, Peacehaven. All the proceeds from the event are going to her chosen charities; Dyslexia Action and the Haydn's Wish Foundation. Tickets on the door and a welcome from Charlotte no doubt.

Over to the adults now... For the energetic ladies of the Haven, the Hillcrest Community Centre, Newhaven is the place to gather this evening for the Ladies Boxing Club. At the same venue, but possibly not at the same time, the centre will hold its regular Friday night Ballroom Dancing evening. With a slightly different beat and sound, the music continues in Newhaven Town Centre where the White Hart has Run 2 playing from around 9.00pm. Up on the hill at the ever-proactive Hampden Arms in South Heighton, Fat Belly Jones will be belting out 80's hits and soul from around 9.00pm.

Head back to the Hillcrest Centre from 9.30am to 10.30am on Saturday morning for Zumba, and then pick up some bargains from the Newhaven market traders, who brave the elements every Saturday morning with their fresh produce and wares. There may even be time to squeeze in a yoga session with Sandra from 10.00am to 11.30am in the upstairs room at Meeching Hall, Fort Road.

Onto the evening and down on the West Quay in Newhaven, The Ark has covers band The Fulker Brothers playing hits from the likes of U2, Tom Petty, Travis, Bryan Adams and others from 9.00pm and over in Seaford, the Shore Bar will be lively from 9.00pm with AKA, an energetic four-piece rock and pop band covering hits from the last few decades, from the soul sound of Stevie Wonder through to rocking bombshell Blondie, and everything in between.

Rounding off the weekend, Newhaven Fort is holding a Summer Sports & Games Day on Sunday which will allow visitors the opportunity to try out a variety of wartime pastimes and complete the Fort PT instructors' challenges, with prizes up for grabs.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy your Haven weekend and don't forget that now the kids are out of school, the Haven's Wave Leisure Centres are hosting summer holiday activities for children and young people right through to 4th of September.
