NEWHAVEN MAN JAILED FOR CANNABIS FARMING

June 26 2012.

A Newhaven man who was found to have more than 130 cannabis plants when police executed a drugs warrant on his home has been jailed.

John Grant, 43, a DJ, formerly of Lewes Road, Newhaven, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to producing cannabis and the abstraction of electricity without authority and was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday (June 21).

The court heard that police officers discovered he had converted his first floor and attic to produce cannabis and they found 105 plants growing and a further 32 hanging up to dry.

Grant was sentenced to 15 months' imprisonment and the court ordered the destruction of the drugs, worth a potential £55,000.

PC Justin Denney from the Newhaven neighbourhood policing team who led the raid said: "This is a good result and shows that courts will deal robustly with offenders who are put before them. I would urge anyone with information about similar activities to call Sussex Police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
