NORMAN CALLS FOR CHANGE TO OLYMPIC TORCH ROUTE

April 29 3012.

Norman Baker has written to the chief executive officer of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and contacted the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, to call for a change to the torch route to "show the best of what Lewes has to offer".

Under current plans, the Olympic torch is already scheduled to pass though Lewes, but the local MP, in conjunction with Lewes businesses, has proposed a new route through the town.

Norman says: "I know that no matter what route the torch takes local residents will be out in droves to support its passage through our vibrant and historic town, but I want to see the torch soak in the best of what Lewes has to offer.

"I know that local small businesses want to see this change and I think that the new route being proposed makes absolute sense. I am therefore very hopeful that LOCOG's chief executive will share that view and that this will be supported by the Secretary of State."

HAVEN NEWS COMMENT - What a pity our MP didn't take the opportunity to instead ask for the torch to visit Newhaven and Seaford, to draw national and international media attention to our towns.
