GROWING IN THE COMMUNITY

27 September 2011

Green fingers at the ready as the Growing Together Community Garden celebrate its achievements with an Open Day this Saturday, 1st October.

Although the Pevensey Road site is always open to the public, visitors will be welcome from 11am on Saturday to explore the garden, take part in various activities and find out about upcoming events.

The garden is run by the Newhaven Community Development Association (NCDA) which was established in 1997 to oversee the regeneration of Newhaven. The Association is prolific in a number of areas and its projects all share the common goal of serving the community of Newhaven.

One currently active project is that of Healthy Lifestyles, co-ordinated by Sally Foote and Jenny Leon. The project focuses on the development of activities and initiatives which address food and health and promote access to physical activity. The team has benefitted from a number of lottery grants that have all been put to good use for the community.

Under the Open Spaces banner it has established the Growing Together Community Garden, which has been funded by the People's Millions lottery grant. "It was especially pleasing to win this grant," said Healthy Lifestyles Development Manager Sally Foote, "as it was gained via people voting through the television programme Meridian Tonight."

The garden provides an open space for the local community to use as its own and enjoy throughout the year. It features a series of raised beds suitable for growing fruit and vegetables, a wildlife aspect, tranquillity area and is suitable for wheelchair and buggy access.

To find out more and see the fantastic achievements of the community garden, head over to the Open Day this Saturday, or go along to one of the wildlife gardening workshop, held every Tuesday until 25th October.

Haven News FEATURES will be taking a look at the work of the NCDA in the coming weeks, starting this week with the Healthy Lifestyles project.
