Nehaven Port Authority has issued the following warning notice:


What is Tombstoning?

Tombstoning involves jumping or diving from a height into water.

It is a high-risk activity, which is unregulated and undertaken by unsupervised individuals.


Tombstoning is dangerous because:

- Water depth alters with the tide; the water may be shallower than it seems

- Submerged objects like rocks may not be visible; they can cause serious injury or death if you jump onto them

- The shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim or cause heart failure

- Strong currents can rapidly sweep people away

- Persons can be sucked towards passing ships and boats, drowned or mangled in propellors


Think before you jump. Don't let alcohol, drugs or peer pressure affect your judgement. Even if you are jumping safely, children may be watching and copy your actions.

In the last few years there have been at least 14 deaths and 40 serious injuries due to tombstoning.

Don't jump into the unknown.

It is both dangerous and forbidden to jump, dive or swim anywhere within Newhaven Harbour Limits.

Offenders are liable to prosecution.
