NEWHAVEN LIFEBOAT RESCUES CATAMARAN

July 11 2011

Newhaven Lifeboat battled gale force winds on Friday morning to rescue a 37ft catamaran with engine failure.

Volunteers from Newhaven's RNLI Lifeboat station were tasked at 10:58 to the vessel, 'Kanaloa', with two people on board which had suffered engine failure nine miles south west of Newhaven. The Kanaloa was making very slow progress in the heavy seas.

The Newhaven Severn class Lifeboat David and Elizabeth Acland arrived on scene within 30 minutes. A tow line was established, as the safe towing speed was greater than the vessel could make way.

The casualty vessel was safely bought into Newhaven harbour and berthed with the help of lifeboat crew. The two tired crew on the casualty vessel thanked the Newhaven RNLI crew for the prompt and professional response.
