ARTWAVE BANK HOLIDAY

August 23 2016.

If you want to escape the DIY, why not go and be inspired by different artists and makers this bank holiday weekend. With over 120 different places to visit during the Artwave Festival, you can even plan a different trail for each of day of the long weekend. Featuring over 400 artists, Artwave 2016, is one of the biggest and most vibrant open house events in the East Sussex calendar.

Artwave opened last weekend with hundreds of people visiting the different artists’ homes, gardens, galleries and studios. Artists were delighted with the amount of interested visitors and sales in the first weekend. These ranged from smaller purchases, to large scale art sold for thousands – there is something for everyone’s purse and interest. Seaford and Lewes town were buzzing with visitors carrying their Artwave programmes, and both the town’s great pubs and cafes and restaurants certainly benefitted from the increase in trade.

Artwave takes place all over the Lewes District, from rural locations off the beaten track, to the coastal towns. Take the time to enjoy lunch in a local pub and afternoon tea at some beautiful picturesque places including Falmer village, Glynde and Ringmer. There is so much to see and do!

Make the most of discovering the unexpected – from downland gardens to a caravan, studios in barns to a driftwood garden, the variety of venues really makes Artwave special. The festival is organised in a series of trails so that you can take in several venues on a day out. The Haven Trail includes Newhaven and Peacehaven and naturally leads on to the Seaford trail, with 10 venues open. The Rural Trail is actually three trails in one and includes the villages of Ringmer, Isfield, Barcombe, Chailey, Cooksbridge, Glynde, Firle, Alciston, Alfriston and Jevington. Here you will find a whole host of pretty country gardens, a great way to get away from home on August bank holiday weekend.

Artwave is a fascinating insight into the world of artists, their methods and places they work. It is not just a visual feast, you can turn your hand to arts and crafts yourself. The festival is full of workshops and demonstrations, from stone carving to alfresco life drawing. Many to the workshops are free or very low cost and include events for children such as wood painting, storytelling and scavenger hunts. Check the brochure or website for details - you are encouraged to call ahead to book a place, especially if you are looking for things to do this weekend.

Artwave Festival 2016 will run until Saturday the 4th of September. Now in its 23rd year, it has attracted over 400 different artists and makers to be part of Artwave, with 2016 being the busiest year to date.
