Newhaven lifeboat launched to unconscious fisherman: Newhaven lifeboat and her volunteer crew were launched at 8:50am yesterday to reports of an unconscious fisherman on a commercial trawler, which was approximately 3.5 miles SE of Newhaven.

Newhaven lifeboat proceeded at full speed to the position and was soon alongside the vessel. Two first aid trained crew were transferred across on to the trawler to assess the casualty who was conscious by this time.

The trawler was steaming ahead with nets down so the lifeboat had to carefully come alongside, staying well clear of the nets.

Once the casualty was stabilised he was transferred to Newhaven lifeboat on a stretcher. The lifeboat made best speed back to the lifeboat station where the casualty was handed over to a waiting ambulance crew and taken to hospital. As a precaution a Coastguard helicopter was also tasked but was not needed on this occasion.

Relief Coxswain Rob Archibald explained: "We were with the trawler very quickly and managed to get our first aid trained guys on board. It’s quite likely this fast intervention helped reduce or eliminate the deterioration of the sick fisherman."


Newhaven lifeboat launched to yacht with electrical failure: Newhaven’s Severn Class lifeboat RNLB David and Elizabeth Aclan’ and her volunteer crew were launched for the second time yesterday at 2.00pm to a 36ft yacht which had suffered electrical failure.

The with two people on board suffered the electrical failure approximately 1.2 miles south east of Newhaven.

Newhaven lifeboat was quickly with the yacht and a tow line was passed in the calm conditions. The casualty vessel was then taken under tow and safely placed in Newhaven marina at 3:00pm.

The lifeboat returned to station shortly afterwards.
