South Heighton Parish Council has successfully obtained a grant for over £119,000 to be spent on The Hollow in South Heighton.

The Parish Council applied for a grant from the *Newhaven Community Fund with the aim of making The Hollow a recreational facility that local residents can enjoy and make the most of, whilst maintaining its rural character.

It is already a popular park and home to Denton and South Heighton Junior Football Club, as well as the annual bonfire celebrations. The additional investment of £119,000 provides the opportunity for the Parish Council to install exciting new play equipment like the dinosaur and its nest in the pictures here, more planting and seating to enhance the park, a trim trail to complement the recent green gym and new access arrangements.

The Parish Council wants to hear the ideas and priorities of the local community before tenders for the work are sought in the autumn and is inviting local residents to have their say. Visit the Parish Council stall at The South Heighton Summer Fete  on Saturday the 8th of July at The Hollow from 2.00pm.


It is hoped that all the improvements will be in place by the May Bank Holiday 2018.

Parish Council Chairman Chris Bradshaw said: “I’m delighted the Parish Council has been given this once in a lifetime opportunity to provide an innovative and imaginative play area and develop The Hollow into a Park for Tomorrow.

"I’m really looking forward to working with Glynde Estates who own the land, officers from Lewes District Council and local residents to establish a park they can be proud of and serves the local community’s needs.”

*The Newhaven Community Fund is a fund of £400,000 to invest in projects in and around Newhaven for the benefit of the community, overseen by East Sussex County Council. The fund was created from the monies donated by Veolia remaining after the completion of the Section 106 environmental compensatory works required with the planning permission for the Energy Recovery Facility in Newhaven.
