The February Newhaven Historical Society presentation covers The Ouse Valley Chalk Pits – Their history and landscape impacts.

The illustrated talk by Dr. Will Pilfold will take place at The Hillcrest Centre, Hillcrest Road, Newhaven, BN9 9EA
on Tuesday the 1st of February at 7.30pm.

It has been claimed that the Ouse valley has more chalk pits than anywhere else in Europe. Although none of these pits are in use today, their history and effects on our local landscape is very interesting, especially to those who live here.

This illustrated talk explores the origins of the pits, their ownership, why the chalk was extracted, their demise and legacies.
