STUDENT SLEEP-OUT RAISES FUNDS FOR NEWHAVEN FOOD BANK

October 6th, 2017.

Sussex Community Development Association (SCDA), which operates Newhaven Food Bank was recently approached by a group of students taking part in a National Citizen’s Service (NCS) course. As part of the course they visited the Food Bank and decided to fundraise for it as well as raise awareness for homelessness in Lewes District. The students organised a sponsored Sleep-Out on land owned by McDonalds in Newhaven and set up an online fundraising page.

The students were very active in advertising their Sleep-Out as well as interviewing members of the public about homelessness. Throughout the night and into the morning, donations were received from passing motorists and pedestrians.

The online fundraising page continued to receive contributions and a grand total of £1800 was raised for the Newhaven Food Bank.

Food Bank manager Sally Foote said: "We are extremely grateful to all involved. Demand for the food bank has tripled over the last three years and the money raised will assist us in re-stocking our shelves to meet this increase in demand."
