SEA SUNDAY SERVICE AT SAINT ANDREWS

June 16th, 2019.

A Sea Sunday Service will be celebrated today at Saint Andrews Church in Bishopstone at 10.15am on July the 14th in aid of The Mission to Seafarers. This year’s theme is ‘Quietly Saving Lives’.

The service will be conducted in the presence of The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Peter Field. Guest preacher, the Reverend Arwen Folkes was recently installed as Rector of the United Benefice of St Peter’s Church, East Blatchington, and St Andrew’s Church, Bishopstone Village.

The purpose of this celebration is to provide a few moments for us as an island nation to reflect upon our dependence on the sea, and for the bountiful fruits that it supplies as a safe thoroughfare and a source of a unique harvest for us on a daily basis. It is a moment during the course of the year when we also give thanks for all those who sacrifice a traditional home life for servicing our needs upon the sea, and the other dangerous services that are conducted thereon.

The Mission to Seafarers supports seafarers in need in over 260 ports in 71 countries around the world, through its global network of chaplains and volunteers who offer a warm welcome, practical and financial support, advocacy services, access to legal advice and family liaison. Life at sea can be dangerous and lonely. The work of a seafarer is one of the most difficult and challenging jobs in the world today, away from family and friends for months or even years at a time. Seafaring can be a tough, isolated and hazardous career.
