SEAFORD JOINS CLIMATE ACTION WAVE OF PROTEST

June 3rd, 2021.

Lewes and Ouse Valley Extinction Rebellion will meet at the Martello tower next Thursday, the 10th of June, at 4.00pm to hold messages in the sea and on land to raise awareness of the plight of people affected by climate breakdown. They will be demanding action at the G7 summit, being held in Cornwall from the 11th to the 13th of June.

A spokesperson from the group said: "This action is part of a national Wave down both sides of the UK, starting on the 7th of June, which moves through Hastings, Eastbourne, Seaford, Brighton and beyond on the 10th and will culminate in protests in Cornwall.

"We are telling Boris Johnson and the leaders of the world’s richest nations to shape up. Our voice is loud and strong and we demand action. Setting targets for 2050, 2040, or even 2030 means nothing if there is no meaningful action now.

"A recent Poll by the UN showed that two-thirds of people globally are concerned that we are in a global emergency. Yet the UN Emissions Gap Report warns that pledges by governments under the 2015 Paris Accord fall far short of what is necessary to keep us below 1.5 degrees of warming, the level scientists say is necessary to prevent runaway climate change.

"As a coastal community, we face flooding and increased storms in the not too distant future. Not to mention crop failures, civil unrest and all that brings. But many communities globally are already severely affected, with the UN estimating 25 million climate refugees already.

"We urge everyone to come along next week, meet us and get involved in this or other national and local actions to be held across the summer leading up to the COP summit in Glasgow in November."
