Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy fun in the sun at the sixth Denton Community Challenge last Saturday.

Nearly 60 local sports and community groups were represented and many of them ran sporting challenges around the arena, all of which could be enjoyed by children for a small charge. On completion of the challenges, the participants were presented with their 'I Am' rosette by Bob Peedle, the chairman of the Seahaven branch of the Royal Society of St George, before enjoying a free burger from the 2nd Denton & South Heighton Scouts BBQ. A record 220 children took part this year.

Lewes MP Maria Caulfield opened the event with Bob Peedle, and Newhaven's Deputy Mayor, Councillor Paul Boswell of Newhaven Town Council helped with many of the afternoon's attractions. Local Paralympian wheelchair basketball player Simon Munn also attended and spoke in support of the event and the importance of involving children in sporting activities.

Activities in the arena kept everyone entertained, with performances and displays from Scriven's Martial Arts, Earthquake Drummers, Norcross Dance School, Z-Energy Zumba, Duende Flamenco Dancers and Up the Tempo dancers. A climbing wall and bungee trampolines provided a bit of extra excitement for youngsters, and the pony rides were back by popular demand.

As well as the bar providing much-needed cold refreshments, the tea bar in the community centre did a roaring trade too, with the added attraction of a well-stocked cake stall, plus a craft fair.

Raffle prizes were drawn in the main arena by Simon Munn and Rev. Louis Wilson of Denton Parish Church. The first prize was again an Apple iPad Mini, kindly donated by Keep It Clean Ltd, and there were many other prizes, all generously donated by local businesses and residents.

The Tug-Of-War ended a fantastic day, enjoyed by the whole community.
