The transformation of Railway Quay in Newhaven started this week with contractors at the harbourside location beginning the work that will lead to the creation of a new gateway to the town centre.

Railway Quay is the area between the former UTC building and the Railway Club and will soon see the opening of a new café followed by further development phases for other businesses and community organisations. Once all the extensive groundwork is complete, lightweight modular units are being used to create the new facilities.

Councillor James MacCleary (pictured, Leader of Lewes District Council and ward councillor for Newhaven South, explained: “While the country continues to respond to the spectre of the Covid-19 pandemic there is little positivity to point to, but I am heartened and excited that this really significant development is now underway.

“It is great news for the economy and waterfront living in Newhaven and I can’t wait to visit with my family when the restrictions are lifted and the weather has warmed up.”

The Town Deal Board, a partnership that includes representatives from Lewes District Council, Newhaven Town Council, Newhaven Enterprise Zone, Maria Caulfield MP, East Sussex County Council and local businesses and stakeholders, secured £500k funding from the government and £350k from the District Council via the community infrastructure levy.

“It is difficult to think of a more vibrant period in Newhaven’s recent history, especially when you consider the inward investment that is creating real momentum behind landmark plans for the town centre and Enterprise Zone.”
