The first ever Newhaven Festival kicks off tomorrow, Saturday the 18th of August and runs for two whole weeks through to Sunday, September the 2nd.The festival includes 16 independently curated
arts events, plus ten open houses.

OPEN CALL- Open today and daily to September the 2ndNewhaven Open Call is a new and exciting
artist led initiative inviting local people and visitors to the area to make a new piece of art about Newhaven.
One piece of work from each participant will be exhibited at UTC, Harbourside, Newhaven during the last weekend in August and the first weekend of September and is an Artwave event.
The idea is to make art, in any medium based on a personal experience of being in the town, responding to locations, artefacts, nature, or social or political agendas.

BIRD BATH- August 18th-24th- 10.30am- 5.30pmFor the first week of the Newhaven Festival from Saturday 18th till Friday the 24th St. Michael’s church is being transformed into a restorative space to bathe in the sound of Newhaven birdsong. From morning till evening the church is going to be filled with field recordings of birdsong taken in the hills, cliffs and woodlands surrounding our town. By Newhaven acoustic artist Alice Eldridge and the kind support of Rev. Martin Miller and members of St. Michael’s congregation.

A truly unique and stunning setting for our film screenings this summer, sit back relax as the sun sets over the Fort, have a look around the Fort before the film starts. Listen to fantastic live music that we provide before every film screening we do.
With the help of a wacky scientist, a young teen travels back to 1955 in a Delorean turned time-machine. Once there, he meets his parents, still teenagers, but his presence throws things out-of-whack and he must ensure they fall in love and get married or else he'll never come to exist.

SPEAK EASY- August 19th- 10.30 – 4.30On Sunday 19th August, as part of the opening programme of the Festival, Alistair Appleton will be interviewing inhabitants of Newhaven (or fans of the place) in an intimate one-on-one setting, to speak all your thoughts and views on the town and surrounding landscape of Newhaven.
What’s your favourite part of the town? What’s the downside of living here? What happened
for you here? Is there a magic spot that summons memories for you?
In sessions from 1 minute to a maximum of 5, Alistair will facilitate and encourage people to express themselves either on video or audio. Depending on mood, you can decide which on the day! So it’s an intimate chat - but also saved for posterity. If you’re happy, your interview will then be woven together into a montage of Newhaveners talking about their town.

Look Up Newhaven! with Dr Cara Courage - Sunday August 19th. 11am – 12.30Fort Process Dispersion presents: Look Up Newhaven with Dr Cara Courage - an informal urban ramble through Newhaven to take in architectural history and details one storey or more up. The ramble will be led by all, participants encouraged to come with their own local knowledge and favourite buildings and places to add to the route. Meet at the train station for an 11 am
prompt start. The ramble will last approximately 1.5 hours and will include some inclines.

The theme of Artwave this year is COLOUR so we hope that locals and visitors may enjoy getting creative and chalking on the pavements, ready for the arrival on Bank Holiday of the amazing, colourful Festival of Belonging. All children must be accompanied by a parent/carer. With some expert guidance from Madeleine McClellan and Melanie Crawshaw make your colourful mark on the town.

Organised by local professionals Anthony Peters and Nicki Day, this promises to be a Bank Holiday to remember.
Gather in Newhaven Town Centre for 10.00am and join the colourful procession including Newhaven's best; Earthquake Drummers, Bonfire Society, Town Crier and the children carrying their bespoke umbrellas.
There will be a real buzz as the atmosphere
rises in celebration of what Newhaven means to everyone and as part of the fabulous Morag Myerscough project, the procession will work its way to the RNLI building where Haven Harmonies will sing, and the procession will continue up to The Fort.
On this ONE
DAY ONLY the entrance to The Fort is FREE and you will experience music, singing, dance, fabulous food, stall holders, puppets and much more. Celebrate your own sense of belonging and wrap yourself in the atmosphere as Newhaven welcomes the Bandstand. The spirit of Los Angeles artist Corita Kent has been channelled with this project, inviting locals to reflect on the concept of ‘belonging’ by making banners to adorn its crown.
