WAVE LAUNCHES WATER SAFETY FOR KIDS SESSIONS

June 15th, 2018.

At the start of Drowning Prevention Week, Wave Leisure Trust (Wave) is bringing back its campaign to ensure that the children of East Sussex stay safe in the water this Summer.

The sessions were launched in 2017 in response to the seven men who drowned at Camber Sands near Rye the previous year.

In 2016, more than 2,000 people were rescued from the seas around the South East Coast of England.

Wave aims to make sure children know how to stay safe when on the beach, in the sea, or having fun in a river, or swimming pool. Wave is adding specific sessions to its Summer timetable to get these messages across.

Wave aims to teach children how to:

1) understand lifeguard flags

2) know what the swimming rules are

3) know how to float and tread water for three minutes or more

Nina Fletcher, Wave’s Aquatics Development Coordinator explains: “It is my job to ensure that as many people as possible learn to swim, providing aquatic life skills for physical activity and fun.

"I am delighted that Wave is repeating this activity for a second year, giving the local community an opportunity to learn how to be safe in and around the water, especially with the arrival of Summer.”

Wave will be hosting the one-hour classes at Lewes Leisure Centre on Tuesday the 31st of July at 10.00am and at Seahaven Swim & Fitness Centre in Newhaven on Tuesday the 14th of August at 10.00am. The sessions will be informative, fun and interactive and for children aged between 8 to 14 years old. They cost £4.00 per child.
