NEWHAVEN'S NEW BANDSTAND

January 23rd, 2019.

Newhaven has a new bandstand, erected by the town council on Denton Island. The quirky structure was designed and built by local artist Christian Funnell and is topped by a roof tiled with galvanized steel “seashells” and an iconic cormorant. It will become the venue for a regular series of concerts and musical events of all kinds during the summer. In the meantime, its beauty is being admired by drivers passing through the town on North Way.

The bandstand was fully financed by grants from the Government’s Pocket Park Fund and Section 106 funding from the incinerator.

A festive event was held just before Christmas when the Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band, as well as Newhaven’s own Earthquake Drummers and Ukelele Group, celebrated the arrival of the bandstand with a small crowd of onlookers. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a mince pie and mulled wine.

This was just a taste of things to come – look out for lots more Bandstand events when the weather turns warmer.

If you would like to perform some music at the Bandstand this summer, contact Newhaven Town Council at admin@newhaventowncouncil.gov.uk or tel: 01273 516100.
