Newhaven has been shortlisted for the next round of a £675 million government fund. It is joined by 50 other towns in the second phase of the Future High Street Fund to transform high streets, out of around 300 towns that applied.

This bid is the latest step in Lewes District Council’s regeneration plans for the town, following the designation of Newhaven as an Enterprise Zone in 2017 and £30 million of investment attracted since then.

Councillor James MacCleary, Cabinet member for Regeneration and Prosperity, said: “I am delighted that the government has recognised the council’s ongoing commitment to the regeneration of Newhaven.

"As a Newhaven resident, I know how desperately our town centre needs investment. This fund certainly represents a step in the right direction, but we all know that much more will be needed.

“We will now work on developing a full business case to fulfil our ambition of quality, inclusive and sustainable growth in Newhaven and ensure that we are delivering what local residents and businesses want.”

The council will work up detailed project proposals over the next nine months, based on their initial plans. These will focus on the changing nature of the town centre and the transition of Newhaven’s high street to a more valuable economic and social role.
