NEWHAVEN PLAYS PART IN UNEMPLOYMENT DROP

July 14th, 2017.

National Employment reaches record high:

There are just over 32million people in work (324,000 more than the same time a year ago and 175,000 more than during the previous quarter).

The national employment rate is now 74.9%, the highest since comparable records began back in 1971.

The south-east employment rate, at 78.9%, is the second highest in the country, only behind the south-west at 79.2%.

Unemployment has fallen again, with 152,000 fewer unemployed claimants than a year ago. The unemployment rate nationally is now 4.5%, a 43 year low, and down from 4.9% for a year earlier.

Ministerial Quote: Damian Hinds, Minister for Employment, said:

“These latest statistics are another reminder that our strong economy is giving record numbers of people the chance to find and stay in work.

Unemployment is low, employment is high and there are over three quarters of a million vacancies.”

Local Picture
In the south-east, employment rose to a new record high, with 4.57m people now in work. The unemployment rate is the lowest in the country, at 3.4%, well below the national rate of 4.5%.

In Brighton and Hove, youth unemployment, which fell below the south-east average rate earlier in the year, continues to fall, with 515 young people aged 18-24 on the claimant count. Overall, unemployment in the city fell to 2895, a fall of 5% from the same time last year. This pattern is repeated in the Lewes constituency, with youth unemployment down 17% on the year, and an overall claimant count of 570.

Steve Benwell, Relationship Manager for the city, said: “These are another set of really encouraging figures that demonstrate the determination among both public and private sector organisations to help support local unemployed people back into work. For example, we are working hard with local partners in Newhaven to develop the Denton Island site as a hub for training opportunities for local people.

Lynsey Williams, Employability and Projects lead for Sussex Skills Solutions, a local training company, said: “Sussex Skills Solutions are proud to work with Jobcentreplus in the local community. For example, our highly successful construction course has been designed in partnership with employers and the local jobcentre to provide people with the opportunity to prepare for jobs in the industry. Sussex Downs College on Denton Island was the perfect place to deliver this to local people with access to both a practical bricklaying workshop and training suites on site.

"One of our learners, Matthew said, “The course has developed various skills that will help me to get into a construction job and has built up my confidence. The trainers were very supportive and worked a pace that was good for everyone.”
