NEWHAVEN LIFEBOAT LAUNCHED TO SINKING VESSEL

June 20th, 2017.

On Sunday Newhaven’s Severn Class lifeboat RNLB David and Elizabeth Acland and her volunteer crew were launched at 12:41pm to a vessel taking on water after hitting rocks.

The 33ft pleasure cruiser with five people on board had hit the bottom south of the Seven Sisters and had continued on her journey. When the pleasure cruiser was approximately half a mile off Newhaven it was spotted that there was a serious water ingress. By this time the port engine was no longer operational.

The vessel limped back towards Newhaven and met the lifeboat near the harbour entrance. All passengers on board were uninjured. Lifeboat crew transferred a salvage pump to the stricken vessel, pumped the water out and kept the water ingress level under control.

When there was sufficient height of tide the pilot boat assisted the casualty to Denton Island. The pleasure cruiser was lifted from the water so the damage could be assessed.

Newhaven crew left the lifeboat station at 7:15pm.
